Cancellation checker apps: the legit, the useless and the scams
Search for driving test cancellations and you will find a crowd of apps and websites offering to find you an earlier slot for a fee. Some are genuine businesses. Some are scams built on desperation and a 20-week waiting list. Here is how to tell them apart.

What you are actually buying
Every checker sells the same core service: software that watches the GOV.UK booking calendar for your test centres and reacts faster than you can. Alerts, or automatic rebooking, at machine speed. The mechanics are covered in how cancellation checkers work; the short version is that none of them has special access, a reserved pool of tests, or any way to guarantee a slot.
As a verified example of the genre: Driving Test Cancellations 4 All, one of the longest-running services, charged a single payment of £20 when we checked in September 2026. For that it watches up to 5 test centres, sends alerts by text, app and email, and can auto-book matching slots if you switch that on. To do it, it asks for your provisional licence number, your test reference, and your date preferences. That data demand is typical of the category, and it is the part to think hardest about.
What the DVSA says
The DVSA’s guidance, published via its Ready to Pass campaign in August 2024, is short and pointed. GOV.UK is the only official booking service. The DVSA does not run, approve or endorse any cancellation finder. Before using one, check what it charges, what personal data it needs and how that data will be used, and know who to complain to about misuse or hidden charges.
Warning signs of a scam
- Guarantees. No service controls the supply of cancellations. “Guaranteed test within 2 weeks” is a claim the honest operators never make.
- Selling tests rather than finding them. Anyone offering to sell you a test slot directly is reselling a booking, the practice DVSA’s rule changes were designed to kill.
- Payment before terms. Real services show their price, refund policy and company details up front. Scams take the money first and reveal nothing.
- Social media DMs. Accounts messaging you offering cancellations, common on TikTok and Instagram, are the highest-risk corner of this market. Verified reviews and a company you can look up on Companies House beat a DM every time.
- Asking for more than the job needs. A checker needs your licence number, test reference and preferences. It has no reason to ask for card details beyond its own fee, your address history, or copies of documents.

- Set your preferences tightly before switching on auto-booking. Car tests only allow 2 changes, and an auto-booker spends them on your behalf.
- Use a service with a checkable trading history: a real company name, reviews across years, and terms you can read before paying.
- When your test is done, close the account and ask for your data to be deleted. UK GDPR gives you that right.
